NYSPIA Applauds Decision Regarding Restraint Techniques

STATEMENT FROM NYSPIA IN RESPONSE TO DECISION REGARDING LAW PROHIBITING RESTRAINT TECHNIQUES (“Diaphragm Compression Bill”)

The New York State Police Investigators Association (NYSPIA) applaud the decision issued today by the Hon. Justice Laurence L. Love relating to the “diaphragm compression bill”. A total of fifteen police unions including NYSPIA joined together in the lawsuit, which was filed on August 5, 2020, in direct response to Section 10-181 of the New York City Administrative Code (“Section 10-181”), a law passed by the City Council on June 18, 2020, that made significant changes to standard restraint techniques that had been taught for decades in police academies across New York and across the country.
